Public language examinations

Students with little or no ability in the Finnish language should seek to enrol in an elementary level course. This may be followed by an elementary level public language examination providing a certificate of language competence. A student with elementary Finnish language skills can read, write and speak the Finnish language for the purpose of managing daily transactions, knows elementary rules of grammar, and has mastered the basic vocabulary of the language.
Students who have already studied the basics of the Finnish language should enrol in an intermediate level course. This may be followed by an intermediate level public language examination providing a certificate of Finnish language competence that meets naturalisation requirements in Finland. A student with intermediate level competence can speak clearly and compose written material effectively, and is also capable of completing official forms and following conversations in the Finnish language.
You may also enrol for an advanced level public language examination at Amiedu.

The websites of the National Board of Education and the University of Jyväskylä provide additional information on national certificates of language proficiency.
